Lenovo ThinkPad L480 Design & Build Quality

When you pull the Lenovo ThinkPad L480 out of your bag, there is no mistaking it for anything else. Lenovo has crafted an iconic identity for the ThinkPad lineup, everyone knows one when they see it. Today, their most affordable variant has landed on our desk for a full review. It’s built like a tank. Lenovo secured MIL-STD 810G certification for this chassis, meaning it can survive the bumps, drops, and temperature swings of a chaotic commute. It is a bit on the chunky side, weighing around 1.60 kg, so it won’t compete with ultra-thin laptops. But what you sacrifice in sleekness, you make up for in sheer durability.

Lenovo ThinkPad L480 review: Display

The 14-inch 1080p IPS panel is perfectly adequate for crunching numbers in Excel or typing up reports, offering good viewing angles and a matte finish that helps cut down on glare. However, it is noticeably dimmer than other ThinkPads. If you’re working in a standard fluorescent-lit office or your living room, you’ll be fine. But if you try to take this laptop outside on a sunny day, the screen will wash out almost completely.

Performance & System Benchmark

Analyzing actual benchmark logs provides an objective, real-world look at how this specific unit performs compared to factory baselines and sister configurations. The results across PC-Mark 10, Geekbench, OpenCL, and CrystalDiskMark paint a clear picture of a highly optimized, stable office machine that maximizes its quad-core architecture while encountering standard integrated graphics and storage boundaries.

Storage Performance (CrystalDiskMark)

The storage profile displays:

  • Sequential Read speed of 543.77 MB/s
  • Sequential Write speed of 445.02 MB/s

These figures align perfectly with high-performance SATA M.2 SSD. While it does not hit the multi-gigabit speeds of premium NV Me PCIe drives, it maximizes the SATA interface. For everyday business applications, boot times, and application launches, the random 4k read/write speeds remain fast enough to ensure the system never feels sluggish or bottle-necked during typical file transfers.

Everyday Processing: (Geekbench)

The processor performance yields a Single-Core Score of 1148 and a Multi-Core Score of 3,166

  • The single-core metric shows excellent optimization for basic applications, confirming that background system tasks don’t throttle primary foreground apps.
  • The multi-core score highlights the efficiency of the 4-core/8-thread layout. It finishes comfortably in line with top-tier Kaby Lake Refresh deployments, validating that the internal cooling system allows the CPU to maintain its turbo boost clocks under sustained multi-threaded rendering workloads without aggressive thermal throttling.

Overall System & Productivity (PC-Mark 10)

The system achieved an overall score of 3,569 in PCMark 10. When broken down into functional sub-scores, the metrics reveal where the hardware excels:

  • Essentials (7,093): This score covers app launch times, web browsing, and video conferencing. A score over 7,000 indicates that everyday operations feel instantaneous, largely thanks to excellent single-core burst speeds and rapid SSD fetch rates.
  • Productivity (5757): Measuring spreadsheet calculations and document editing, this high score confirms that the system handles complex office workloads, large data sheets, heavy multi-tasking comfortably.
  • Digital Content Creation (3023): This score reflects photo editing, video rendering, and graphics manipulation. The drop here is expected, as these tasks rely heavily on a discrete GPU, which this machine lacks.

CPU details

This laptop is powered by an Intel Core i5-8250U processor, which belongs to the Kaby Lake-R generation. Built on a 14-nanometer architecture, this chip is highly optimized for mobile efficiency, featuring a low 15.0W maximum thermal design power (TDP) that helps preserve battery life. It packs 4 physical cores and 8 threads, giving it reliable multi-tasking capabilities for standard office workloads. It is officially rated for a 1.60 GHz base clock speed and maximum turbo boost speed of 3.40 GHz, which is completely normal as the system downclocks to conserve energy when not under heavy load.

Battery Back-up

Given that my review unit is refurbished, I am getting roughly half the battery life of a brand-new model, yielding about 2 to 3 hours of use. This is perfectly acceptable, especially considering the age of a laptop which is still in perfect condition.

Connectivity

Lenovo has worked pretty well to give decent port connectivity for their ThinkPad series:

On the left side, 2x USB 3.1 Type-C Gen 1, Docking-Port, USB 3.0 Gen 1, HDMI 1.4b,  microSD card reader, Ethernet

Lenovo ThinkPad L480 review: Keyboard and touchpad

This is where the L480 truly shines. Lenovo is famous for its keyboards, and this laptop delivers that top-tier typing experience. The keys have a satisfying, deep travel distance and a tactile bounce that makes typing long documents genuinely enjoyable. Naturally, it features the iconic red TrackPoint nub nestled in the center of the keyboard, complete with dedicated physical left, right, and center click buttons above the touchpad. If you prefer the touchpad, the precision surface is smooth, highly responsive, and handles Windows 10/11 multi-finger gestures flawlessly.

Bottom Line

The ThinkPad L480 isn’t trying to win any beauty contests, nor is it trying to break benchmark records. It’s a practical, no-nonsense business machine. If you need a gorgeous, vibrant screen for creative work, you’ll want to look elsewhere. But if your top priorities are a world-class keyboard, rugged durability, and reliable everyday performance that won’t destroy your budget, the L480 is a dependable daily driver that more than holds its own.
